Main Street Goals, Projects and Accomplishments * Renovated the Sunrise Theatre (circa 1923). Reopened in January 2005 with a stellar performance by Dion Warwick. After almost a quarter century of silence the Sunrise Theatre is back in business, ready to reclaim its title as the Jewel of the Treasure Coast. The City of Fort Pierce has taken over operations of the Theatre. This project has received over $2.7 million in state grants, 8 million in government funds, and over $2 million in private donations. .
*Sponsored a charrette in 1995 at which over 250 people presented their ideas for a "Master Plan" for Historic Downtown Fort Pierce. * Obtained state Main Street grant for 15 matching facade projects amounting to over $10,000. * Worked with the City of Fort Pierce to obtain a grant for the restoration of the North Second Street historic bridge known as "Tickle Tummy Hill" from Department of Transportation valued at $150,000. The "Tickle Tummy Bridge" was reopened on Dec. 7, 1997. * Built the Manatee Observation and Education Center with grant dollars from the Florida Inland Navigation District and matching funds from local donors. The value of this project was over $350,000. The Center is now operated by the Fort Pierce Utilities Authority and sees over 75,000 vistors per year (October through April). For

*Renovated Historic City Hall with grants through the Bureau of Historic Preservation and matching local funds valued at over $480,000. * Worked with St. Lucie to Construct a new library was finished and is in use. This is a result of the Master Plan with a value of over $2,500,000.

Formed a Community Redevelopment Agency and CRA waterfront development--
another result of the Master Plan with a value of $1,000,000. * Purchased the A.E. “Beanie” Backus House in June 2005. Main Street Fort Pierce is in the process of restoring the two story wood-framed house, which will serve as a permanent home for Main Street and will be open to the public. The project has received over $400,000 in grants.
* Completed three murals in historic downtown Fort Pierce with the St. Lucie Mural Society, including a Mural - In - A - Day for the Centennial.
